What is the BetterPoints Go-Hi challenge?

The BetterPoints Go-Hi challenge is a free-to-join rewards program designed to help you travel sustainably, get active and earn rewards. It is open to residents and employees in the Highlands and Islands area.

How has the BetterPoints Go-Hi challenge been funded?

The BetterPoints Go-Hi challenge is funded by HITRANS.

Why should I take part in the Go-Hi challenge?

BetterPoints is an award-winning app that encourages people to get active and travel sustainably. Taking part will allow you to earn rewards for travelling in active and environmentally friendly ways. You can support local traders and charities with the BetterPoints you earn. The secure and anonymised data your participation provides will also help to improve planning for active and sustainable transport.

How can I get involved?

  • Download the free BetterPoints app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • If you live in the Highlands and Islands area you will be automatically added to the Go-Hi challenge.
  • Check out the BetterPoints Go-Hi challenge Activity Rewards area in the app to find out more about what you will earn rewards for.

To get started with recording your activities in the app, here's what you need to do:

  • To start recording a journey, toggle automatic tracking on from the top right corner of the app.
  • The app will detect when your journey has ended and send you a notification around 15 minutes later.
  • The app should detect the journey mode automatically, but, if it has gotten it wrong you can change this from the drop down menu and then confirm your activity.
  • Your points and tickets will be awarded once your journey is confirmed.
  • Check your points balance on the homescreen and treat yourself via the Rewards catalogue or help your favourite charity by donating your points through the app.

You can either leave the tracking toggled on at all times so that you don't need to think about it; or, you can toggle the tracking on and off as and when you go out. The choice is yours!

How can I earn points or win a prize?

You can earn points and win lots of fantastic prizes when the app records your active and sustainable journeys, as well as taking part in our many competitions and prize draws, which will be communicated through the app.

What is the difference between BetterTickets and BetterPoints?

BetterPoints can be earned by logging eligible activities and over time they add up. Your points balance appears on the homescreen. Once you’ve collected enough points you can redeem them for vouchers in the catalogue on the app or donate them to charity. 1,000 BetterPoints is worth £1.

BetterTickets are prize draw entries earned for doing a specific activity. The tickets you earn automatically enter you into our weekly, monthly or special one-off prize draws. The more tickets you earn, the more chance you have of winning. Prizes can include pots of BetterPoints and specific items which will be posted out to you.

What can I spend my points on?

You can check out our list of local and national vouchers by tapping the Rewards tab at the bottom of the app. On there, you can also give your points to your favourite charity by tapping Donate.

Can I take part if I use a wheelchair, and if so, how do I record my journeys?

Yes! All kinds of wheelchairs can be logged as wheeling in our app. You download the app as per the instructions above. Due to the motion sensors inbuilt in your device, and our algorithms in the app, it may assume you are cycling, rather than wheeling. In your timeline, after completing your journey, you will be able to amend this to wheeling and your journey will be updated. You will be awarded the same amount of points and/or tickets as walking or cycling journeys.

How do I set my device permissions correctly?

To ensure that the app functions correctly, please check your device permissions to make sure that they look like this:

iPhone device settings.

Or, on Android:

Android permission settings and battery optomisation. Android permissions may look different depending on the device.

How much information do I need to share to sign up?

When you first register to use the BetterPoints app, it will ask you to provide personal details to get you started. This includes your name, email address, year of birth, location, and postcode. We also ask you to create a secure password for accessing the BetterPoints app and protecting your account.
